Why do things happen the way they do?
We built DigMyData to take the pain out of analytics and replace it with valuable learning. We have built several web products and each time we end up asking ourselves: "Why do things happen the way they do?"
Adam's grandmother owned and managed a restaurant for 20 years back in the 1950s. She knew each day who her customers were, why sales were up or down, which item on the menu sold the best, which of her employees performed well that day, and which promotion put people in seats. She could see this happening right in front of her.
We're following her in running our own business, but we can't see our customers as they come in the front door nor can I tell how they feel they have been treated as they exit. We can't tell why Joe passed up on widget X and instead bought widget Y. Or why Samantha left without buying at all. Web based businesses have many advantages over my grandmother's restaurant, but understanding "Why do things happen the way they do?" isn't one of them.
Mark comes from a line of engine builders (mechanical and computational) with an entrepreneurial flair. The symphonic quality of a smooth running process that produces something useful is what soothes his soul. Mark knows that to make any engine purr requires a stream of data feeding back into adjustments whether that is fuel mixture ratios or how much to spend on AdWords.
An online business can be an engine, too. But, the data streams are many and the access to them is sketchy. And, playing with them to see how they relate can be an incredible chore.
We want to solve these problems.
The data we need has always been there but stuck in spreadsheets, hiding behind obscure web services, or competing for our time to make sense of them.
It's time to enjoy your data.
