The DigMyData Blog

Small update, big stuff coming

Posted on May 21st, 2011 by Adam in Blog Development Starting Up

We just pushed out a new release tonight (Friday) that includes lots of little improvements to move us away from early access and a little closer to a public launch.

In terms of new features, the main improvements this time around are:
1. Unsaved chart set indicator

2. Mouse scroll wheel zoom and scroll chart

3. Pivot table defaults and support for large datasets

4. Another 35 other improvements (like making it less likely you might accidentally delete an RSS feed in Settings or changing some labels to clarify what buttons do).

We’re neck deep into some big new features like: Predictions, Google AdWords & MailChimp integrations, and annotations, which we are calling “Story Points”. We’re putting the email reports and WordPress stats on the back burner while we move ahead with the above awesomeness. We also have some Google Analytics splitting out/break down coming as well – you’ll never need to open Google Analytics again!

A Short Story, by DigMyData

Posted on May 19th, 2011 by Adam in Blog Short Story Starting Up Thoughts

Yesterday Mark and I were talking about some adjustments to the DigMyData interface. Mark logged in to DigMyData to see how we were currently doing something and noticed a very curious spike in traffic. Who dare drive traffic to our lowly startup? Then, just below the spike in traffic was the culprit.

Ryan Carson of Carsonified had linked to us. We were super pleased to see that he had said nice things about our design – specifically the illustration on our homepage. Thanks Ryan!

As DigMyData gets closer to launching publicly we’ll post more of these “Short Stories” of how DigMyData turns your data into stories (this is done very much in the same spirit as Peldi did as he launched Balsamiq Mockups).

Post-LessConf Release

Posted on May 11th, 2011 by Adam in Blog Development Starting Up

We survived our trip to Atlanta for LessConf and the sponsorship of said event (we weren’t the only ones, but sounds big of us). More on our time at LessConf soon.

Here’s the highlights of the release:

  • 15 bug fixes
  • 11 new features/improvements
  • 26 total JIRA tickets closed
  • 12 days since we last released (April 29)
  • 4 happy faces because Amazon worked like a champ!

Not as many new features this time around as our last release, BUT if you are an AWeber customer, then you’ll love this release.

1. AWeber event stats – Now when you send out a broadcast to your AWeber list we will place a slick looking event on your chart that also includes how many subscribers the email was sent to, how many times the email was opened, and how many clicks the links got. Combine these email stats with your PayPal data or Google Analytics traffic and you’ll begin to see how your email marketing is (or isn’t) influencing your success.

2. AWeber full list history – In our previous releases we only tracked AWeber lists from the moment you signed up. With a little rework and some gymnastics with AWeber’s API we now offer you a full history of your list. This is incredibly powerful as you can go back in time and view where you got your biggest surges in signups for your list.

AWeber - Full subscriber history

One way to learn about who helps you add new email subscribers:

1. Go to the Google Analytics settings in DigMyData

2. Turn on “Show linking sites” (and adjust the filter to your preference)

3. Return to the chart and zoom out to year view

4. Locate time period where your subscribers jump significantly and zoom in on that period

5. Click through some of the sites that referrer you some traffic to better understand who might have sent you traffic that resulted in those signups.

Other new features or improvements:

- Google Analytics settings: Indicate whether goals are active or inactive

- Google Analytics settings: Show reconnect button when authorization token becomes invalid

- Gmail settings: Changed update message to indicate which Gmail label was updated

- Fixed some layout issues found in IE9

- Removed the GetSatisfaction button from the chart. Questions about the application itself too often require disclosing private information and we don’t want that showing up on a public site like GetSatisfaction. Plus it was in the way.

- Improved the signup page for those of you with invites

- Lots of production bugs, mainly dealing with an increased load after LessConf

Upcoming release(s):

- Our next release is a little lighter as we’re running a bit lean for a few weeks on development; we’ll be back to full speed soon.

- We’re looking at adding a daily/weekly email report, predictions (more on that over here), WordPress stats (visitor #s and comments), and AdWords. If you feel strongly on the priority one way or another, let us know!

- MailChimp. We keep hearing from you about adding MailChimp. Should that be higher up the list?
